1. Where can I find child care for my children?

In Sacramento County, contact Child Action, Inc., a child care resource and referral agency expert. They can help you find child care in your area. Call (916) 369-0191.

2. I have no food or money. Can I get emergency food stamp coupons?

If you are eligible, you may get food stamp coupons within three (3) days. Call the Department of Human Assistance at (916) 874-2072 for a DHA office nearest you. Tell them you want emergency food stamp coupons. Food Stamp Facts

3. I receive CalWORKs and my teenage daughter is pregnant. What help can she get?

The Cal-Learn program is designed to assist pregnant and parenting teens receiving California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs). The Cal-Learn program helps pregnant and parenting teens to attend and graduate from high school or its equivalent. Cal-Learn Facts

4. My child's father does not pay child support. Can I get help?

The Sacramento County Department of Child Support Services (DCSS) can help you get an order of parentage and child support. Call the DCSS Customer Service Center at (916) 875-7400 or visit the DCSS web site.

5. I feel depressed and am having trouble sleeping. Is there help available?

Yes, help is available. If you are receiving CalWORKs, call your caseworker or the CalWORKs Counseling Hotline at (916) 875-3869. If you do not receive CalWORKs or Medi-Cal, call the Mental Health Access line at 1-888-881-4881.

6. My family receives CalWORKs and we are homeless. Can we get help?

Homeless families on CalWORKs can apply for a one-time only special need payment to meet their costs for temporary and permanent housing. Contact your caseworker for more information. CalWORKs Facts

7. I want to be a volunteer driver for the Meals on Wheels Program. Who do I call?

The Meals on Wheels program needs drivers to deliver hot and frozen meals to frail, homebound elderly men and women throughout Sacramento County. Drivers must own a vehicle, have insurance and a valid drivers license, and be available to work for two hours, one day a week, Monday - Friday. 8. Can I apply for Medi-Cal through the mail?

Yes, if you live in Sacramento County, you can apply for Medi-Cal by calling the Automated Medi-Cal Application Line at (916) 874-2215.

10. How do I get medical insurance?

The County Medically Indigent Services Program (CMISP) provides medically necessary care to all eligible indigents who are residents of Sacramento County.

11. How do I apply for cash assistance for my family?

The application for CalWORKs includes completion of eligibility forms and an interview with a case manager.  Aid cannot begin until all conditions of eligibility have been verified. For more information, please see the CalWORKs Factsheet.

12. How do I find out who my caseworker is?

For general information about DHA programs and services, to find out where to apply, or to contact your caseworker, call: (916) 874-2072

13. How do I report welfare fraud?

If you know someone who is committing welfare fraud, the following information will be helpful to our investigators:

  1. What is the full name of the person?
  2. What is their current address?
  3. How are they committing welfare fraud?
    Example: If they are working and not reporting it, please tell us where they are working, and what name they are working under. Also the social security number they are using, if known.
  4. May we contact you? If so, what is your name and phone number? (Your identity will be kept confidential)

15. How do I file for a Fair Hearing?

16. How do I get a car loan?

If you would like to find out if you or someone you know is eligible for the Automobile Loan Program, please call your CalWORKs caseworker.

17. How do I donate to the Career Clothes Closet?

The clothes closet is operated by the Department of Human Assistance Employment Services office located on 4990 Stockton Blvd. Donated clothing should be clean, current styles, in good repair, and on hangers if possible. Items needed include suits, coordinates, shoes, lingerie, new hosiery and accessories (scarves, belts, etc.).

Donations are tax deductible and receipts are provided. Call (916) 875-3330 for more information or to donate. Clothing can be dropped off at the address listed Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
