Frequently Asked Questions about volunteering with Meals On Wheels
- Do you provide the vehicle to volunteers for delivering meals?
- Volunteers are responsible to provide their own vehicle. However, we do offer reimbursement for mileage.
- Is a background check required?
- A background check is required for some volunteer positions including Meals On Wheels Delivery Driver and All Seasons Café volunteer. Driving positions also require a review of the applicants DMV Drivers License Record.
- Do you deliver meals in the evening or on weekends?
- We do not deliver meals in the evening or on weekends.
- What if I’m only available one day per week?
- Most of our volunteer opportunities are designed for people to work one day per week Monday through Friday. However, some people choose to work more.
- Can I help if I don’t drive?
- Yes. There are other many ways to help besides delivering meals. Consider applying to work in the All Seasons Café, Kitchen, or Promotion Office.
- I’ve applied but I haven’t heard anything. What should I do?
- This rarely happens. But, if you’ve applied and haven’t received a call within a week, please call us at 916-444-9533 and ask for the volunteer office. Someone will help you.
- Do you reimburse delivery volunteers for mileage?
- Yes, we offer reimbursement for mileage of the delivery route. The current rate is 50.5 per mile.
- Can my spouse, child, parent or friend do the route with me?
- People can deliver as couples or teams. Everyone, drivers and passengers, must apply and be cleared through the program before delivering meals. All team members must be adults.
