- Sacramento County's Meals on Wheels Program Helps San Joaquin County Feed Senior Residents
- Sacramento County's Meals on Wheels Program is providing 9,500 meals to San Joaquin County to help feed resident seniors. San Joaquin County is taking over the responsibility from Seniors First, a nonprofit that is struggling from rising costs and sagging contributions and has been serving meals to resident seniors for more than 25 years.

- Homeless to be Counted in Sacramento County
- As a condition of receiving Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funding, counties are required to conduct a "point in time" count of homeless individuals every two years during the last seven days of January. DHA, the major grantee for these funds, receives approximately $13.5 million annually to use to contract with numerous community agencies to provide housing and services for formerly homeless persons.

- Sacramento Volunteer Receives Bank of America's Local Hero Award
- Richard Wharton, a volunteer with the Sacramento County Department of Human Assistance Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP) was honored with the prestigious Bank of America Local Hero Award at Arco Arena on November 13, 2007. Mr. Wharton, a wheelchair user, volunteers every day at the Salvation Army working with men who are in rehabilitation. He also volunteers at the Roseville Care Facility where residents describe Richard as a "caring person they always look forward to seeing."

- Attendance Centers Will Open Up At Three Local High Schools
- On Tuesday, December 18, 2007, the Sacramento Police Department will announce the opening of three attendance centers. The attendance centers are located at three local schools; Inderkum High School, Luther Burbank High School, and C.K. McClatchy High School. The Attendance Center program is a partnership between the Sacramento Police Department, the Sacramento City Unified School District, the Natomas Unified School District, the Office of Youth Development, Sacramento County Department of Human Assistance (DHA), and several community-based organizations to address the root cause of truancy among students.

- County Collects Over 900 Blankets for Homebound Seniors
- Tomorrow, Tuesday, December 18, seniors who receive home delivered meals from the Sacramento County Department of Human Assistance (DHA) Senior Nutrition Services Meals on Wheels program will start receiving some of the more than 900 blankets and other cold weather items that were donated earlier this month.
The Friends of Meals on Wheels (FOMOW), a non-profit fund raising committee, planned the "Senior Blanket Drive" to give the frail elderly on the home delivered meal routes a gift for the holiday season. DHA Program Specialist Mark Snaer said staff and volunteers collected blankets, gloves, scarves, hats and other items to help keep seniors warm throughout the cold months. "All the items donated are new or were handmade especially for this drive," said Snaer.

- Winter Shelter Opens Early to Respond to Immediate Need of Homeless
- In response to a community health and safety need to find alternate housing options for homeless campers evicted from Union Pacific Railroad private property, the Winter Shelter, located at Cal Expo, operated by Volunteers of America and funded by the Sacramento County Department of Human Assistance (DHA), will open 10 days earlier than planned. The shelter will open today, Friday, November 9. Able to house up to 154 men, women and children each night throughout the cold and wet winter months, it will remain open through late March 2008.

- Sacramento County Prepares Tax Returns Benefiting Low-Income Working Families
- On Monday, January 29, 2007 the Sacramento County Department of Human Assistance (DHA) starts its eighth year of free tax preparation for low and moderate-income working families. They will also receive help in applying for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).
- DHA has trained 107 members of its staff to prepare taxes, and will be doing tax preparation at 10 separate locations throughout the county. Hours of operation vary at each location and include weeknight and weekend times. Also many of the locations will be providing services in different languages.

- ARCADE AT CAL EXPO WILL NOW BE WINTER SHELTER TO HOMELESS MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN
- Sacramento County's Winter Shelter Program at Cal Expo opens on Tuesday, November 21, 2006 and will provide shelter to homeless men, women and children during the cold, rainy months this season.
- The Winter Shelter Program will be able to accommodate immediate shelter needs of homeless men, women and children, when other local shelters are full. It will remain open until March 31, 2007. For the sixth year in a row, Volunteers of America will administer the program under contract to the Sacramento County Department of Human Assistance in partnership with Cal Expo.

- The Sacramento County Department of Human Assistance Senior Nutrition Services Meals on Wheels program serves more than 2,400 meals each day to homebound and mobile seniors in Sacramento County. Now they have a new kitchen to do it from.

- The fifth annual March for Meals Week is one of many events scheduled across the U.S. in March to draw attention to the importance of elderly meal programs for frail homebound senior citizens. In recognition of this week, Sacramento County elected officials will personally deliver meals to the seniors in their homes.
